    Remembrance Day 2020

Like so many events and days of celebration and remembrance this year, the Poppy Appeal like lots of charities has had to adapt to Covid-19.  Unfortunately thousands of poppy collectors were unable to sell poppies locally in out supermarkets, schools and shopping centres and many fundraising events had to be cancelled. As a school, we still wanted to have the traditional collection for the poppy appeal but we wanted to raise as much money as possible and talk to our children about the importance and significance of Remembrance Day.

'Every poppy counts' was the catchphrase for the The British Legion this year and that’s certainly true.  We wanted to do something different alongside the appeal and at the same time we wanted to speak to the children and find out what they know about the Poppy Appeal. It’s safe to say our younger generation know a lot and it was heart warming to hear their explanation of the reason behind the significance of the 'poppy'. Our children sat in small groups in their bubbles and made individual poppies from crepe paper, wire and polystyrene balls.  Parents and carers were then able to purchase a poppy and we raised just from our handmade poppies a super £45.   Our younger children also made a poppy wreath which we donated to South Moor Lodge Care Home for their residents to enjoy.
